| What is the HBOT treatment like?
At the beginning of the treatment, you may experience a sensation similar to that felt while flying in an airplane. As pressure builds, it is normal to feel pressure in the ears. At the end of the treatment, as the pressure decreases, the ears equalize automatically. Most patients rest comfortably throughout treatment, while reading, sleeping, listening to music or watching T.V. Most Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments last between one and two hours. Our Sechrist 3600E, Monoplace, hard chambers are leading edge models featuring patient comfort, safety and operator convenience enhancements. The 3600E specialized gurney and stretcher are designed for patient comfort as well as ease of loading and unloading. The chambers clear, acrylic compartment is 36 inches in diameter, allowing for parental accompaniment for children who may experience anxiety. Communication between the patient and the operator is continually maintained through the chambers two-way intercom system. Do I need a referral from my Doctor to take HBOT? You can self refer to our facility, however, we do encourage you to consult with your doctor regarding any therapies you are pursuing. Prior to your first HBOT session, we will qualify you to ensure that you are a good candidate for HBOT. The qualification process most often can be done over the telephone. If you have or have had any of the contraindications you may not be elligible for HBOT. Is HBOT covered by medical insurance? There is potential for OHIP coverage for 13 conditions as long as the HBOT is performed in a hospital. If you have any of the 13 conditions, please contact your Doctor immediately. Private medical insurance coverage in Canada is minimal and restricted because of a lack of standardization in private HBOT facilities. Currently, a Canadian committee headed by Dr. Sanja Savic Kallesoe is working closely with America's Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society to establish a sister organization that will be recognized by the College of Surgeons and Physicians and subsequently, private insurance providers. Please ask your insurance provider if HBOT is covered under your plan. How many HBOT treatments will I need? The treatment's pressure and duration, as well as the number of treatments received is determined based on the patient's diagnosis and their body's response to the therapy. In general, patients with chronic conditions usually receive a longer series of treatments than patients with acute conditions. |
